Some faculty, parents, and staff believe that wearing a school uniform
will help students to see each other as equal and not judge one other by
how they dress. Others feel that implementing a uniform takes focus
off of what people are wearing so that they can concentrate more on their
education. What these adults are not taking into consideration is
the fact that students, no matter what age, have the right to learn in
an environment that is most comfortable for them. This means that
students should be free to wear what makes them feel the best about themselves.
I accept any parents choice to support school uniforms. It is their parental right to do so. Faculty, parents and staff have many beliefs in favor of the decision to implement the school uniform policy and force it upon every parent and student in their school system. There are several inconsistencies, however, in their supposed theories. These are just a few of the arguements made in favor of mandating a school uniform:
1) Arguments have been made that uniforms will improve grades and reduce violence. To date, there has been no empirical data collected that will support this assumption.
2) Uniforms are cheaper than regular clothing. There is no truth to this. Unless we expect students to wear their uniforms all the time, parents must buy their children two sets of clothing.
3) It has been said that uniforms
will reduce the class distinction between the rich and poor.
Uniforms will not change a student's neighborhood, parent's income, car,
motorboat, or vacations. Even something as simple as gold jewelry
or a flashy pair of sneakers can provide information about their economic
status.
